LÂMPADAS ELÉTRICAS ANTIGAS
ANTIQUE light bulbs

Over the years, inventors and engineers attempted to develop a reliable electric incandescent lamp. Among them, there are the electric candles originally developed by the British physicist William Robert Grove in 1840, and the officer of Russian army, M. Jablochkoff in 1876. In the former, Platinum filament is built encased in an inverted glass sealed by water.

Basically in the Jablochkoff’s lamp the filament consists of two carbon rods, 4 mm in diameter by 250 mm in length, placed side by side and separated entirely by a non-conductor material, as kaolin. Such mechanical-electric arrangement is fed by alternating current and assembled inside of an opaline glass globe.

Therefore, after many experiments using different types of materials on October 24th, 1879 finally Thomas Alva Edison conducted the demonstration of the first reliable electric incandescent lamp by using carbon filament.

A PRIMEIRA APLICAÇÃO COMERCIAL DA LÂMPADA ELÉTRICA INCANDESCENSTE DE EDISON – A ILUMINAÇÃO DO EDIFÍCIO DO JORNAL NEW YORK TIMES - EUA

THE FIRSTCOMMERCIAL USE OF THE EDISON ELECTRIC INCANDESCENT LAMP – THE NEW YORK TIMES BUILDING IS ILLUMINATED BY ELECTRICITY - USA

On September 4th, 1882, the building of the newspaper, “New York Times” was illuminated by the Edison electric incandescent lamp. The report collected from the newspaper’s September 5th edition comments the engagement of “Edison Electric Illuminating Company” in such pioneering technological endeavor, since the installation of the electricity distribution network nearby the building, up when the lamps were lit all over the several newspaper departments.  Several interesting aspects related with the performance of the new technology were commented also. Among them: simplicity to turn the lamps on, no need of matches, odorless operation, as well as the steady and brilliance of the light source when compared with the former gas lamp counterpart.

The Edison electric lighting system was a great technological revolution. Therefore, as in many innovations and inventions it generally led to misunderstanding as happened with the use of the electric incandescent lamp.
In the beginning people tried to light the lamp with a match, similar as required in the early illumination system as: kerosene lanterns, gas fed street lamps, etc.

The street lamp used in the artificial lighting in several Europeans city in the beginning of XIX century.  Generally, such a kind of lantern uses piped coal gas as fuel. Basically it produces a simply naked flame of varying shapes, depending of the type of burner; these had names as cockspur and fishtail.
The lanterns fixed in poles or walls were lit every evening by the lamplighter through a wick in a long rod which was fed through the lantern’s bottom hinged base.

To avoid accidents, “The Edison Electric Light Company”, issued signs, generally affixed on the wall by the door, as shown the illustrated reproduction.

ACIONE O INTERRUPTOR PRÓXIMO A PORTA.

The vibratory character of an alternating current and the force of a magnetic field from a small magnet when placed over the glass bulb of an antique incandescent lamp create a curious oscillatory luminous pattern of its carbon filament.
