11.9 - FROM ABACUS TO THE DIGITAL COMPUTER

Since early days mankind has been looking for improving the Mathematical calculations bothersome processes. Thus, the abacus was one of the first instruments used for quick Mathematical calculations, originally invented in China circa 3000 B.C. Such a calculating device was used for arithmetical processes often constructed as a wooden frame with beads sliding on wires.
Therefore the first concepts for building mechanical calculators appeared around the XVI century only. Fig. 353.
